Art League of Rhode Island: 7th Annual Members’ Exhibition
The Galleries of the Providence Art Club are pleased to host the Art League of Rhode Island’s (ALRI) 7th Annual Members’ Exhibition. Over 50 artist members representing 20 Rhode Island communities will have works on view in a wide variety of media, including photography, sculpture, glass, paintings in oil, watercolor and others. Among the works on display will be Little Compton artists Johanna W. McKenzie, Dora Atwater Millikin and Ian Silvia

Now in its seventh year, the original group of 46 founding members has grown to over 80 juried-in dedicated artist members. Led by newly elected president James Kubiatowicz, the ALRI continues its commitment to artists, collectors and the community at large, truly embodying its reputation as what the Rhode Island Foundation recently called “an important organization in the state’s arts community”.

In their first major exhibition in Providence, the Art League of Rhode Island will partner with the historic Providence Art Club, filling its three galleries (including the newly expanded Möite) with an all-media exhibition. Past Annual Members’ Exhibitions have been held at Bristol Art Museum (2001, first exhibition), Virginia Lynch Gallery (2002), Feinstein Building at URI (2003) and the Newport Art Museum (2006), venues which demonstrate the League’s capacity and drive for building community partnerships.

The Providence Art Club is excited to usher in the beginning of its exhibition season with this exceptional group of artists. During this three-week show, the community is invited to attend two Sunday lectures organized by the ALRI. The first, scheduled for Sunday, September 16, 3:00–3:30 p.m. will feature Joan Backes, painter and installation artist. Backes currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Art Department at Brown University. A second lecture will be held Sunday, September 23, also from 3:00–3:30 p.m., and will feature David Henry, Program Director for the Institute of Contemporary Art. In addition to his current position at the ICA, Henry is the former Director of Education for the Rhode Island School of Design. These events, including the opening reception, are free and open to the public.
