Biography

Graceful, magical, delicate, enigmatic among all art forms, glass sculpting requires masterful skill and perfect timing. Ian Silvia possesses both, in addition to a glorious sense of color and design and superb draftsmanship in a three dimensional form. To watch a glass blower working with molten glass in a furnace with temperatures around 2000 degrees, it can be difficult to imagine how it is possible to control the shape and design of the piece. Silvia's figurative glass sculptures add yet another dimension to the process by demanding exacting forms and drawing.

Ian Silvia received his formal art training at Massachusetts College of Art where he earned a BFA in illustration. Equally gifted in painting and sculpting, he turned his attention to glass. This young artist's figurative glass sculptures are each quite unique, not only in pose and concept, but also in color and texture. The piece may be smooth and sleek, allowing light to glint off the surfaces, or opaque with a sandy-textured coating of powdered glass, or clear, so that the facets of the figure pick up and reflect background colors like a diamond. Some pieces are made of layers of colored glass that one can look through. The forms are beautifully shaped with a lovely classical influence.

Silvia has exhibited his work in galleries in many parts of the United States including Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Ohio, and has participated in shows and completed commissions in a number of galleries and museums, most notably the ALRI Bristol Art Museum in Bristol, RI, and the Decodova Museum in Lincoln, MA. He has worked as a glass artist in a number of studios including Thames Glass in Newport, RI, Sterling Glassworks, Sterling, MA, Umbilical Glass and Metal, Boston, MA, Elias Studios Inc. in Rehoboth, MA and New Orleans School of Glass in New Orleans, LA. In 1994 Silvia, together with his wife, opened his own glass studio in Little Compton, RI. In his glass workshop, Fried Glass Studios, Silvia creates and sells both functional and sculptural glass pieces, works on commissions and teaches adult classes and workshops, in addition to inviting the public to come visit and watch the fascinating glass blowing process.

Silvia's work is represented in a number of galleries in New England and the Midwest, and is included in collections throughout the country. Ian Silvia currently lives in Little Compton with his wife and child.
